THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The cabinet meeting decided to commute the sentence of Sherin, the first accused in the infamous Bhaskara Karanavar murder case. Sherin's sentence was commuted to life imprisonment for 14 years. As she has completed the 14-year jail term, Sherin will be allowed to walk out of prison soon. Bhaskara Karanavar was killed by his daughter-in-law Sherin in November 2009.

The murder plan was prepared when Karanavar happened to know about Sherin’s extramarital relationship. Karanavar who returned to Kerala from US was asleep when Sherin with the help of two others suffocated him to death. Apart from Sherin, the court also sentenced Basit Ali, Nithin alias Unni and Shanu Rasheed to life imprisonment in the case. On June 11, 2010, Sherin was sent to Poojappura Central Jail after being convicted by the Mavelikara fast track court. Sherin was then transferred to Neyyattinkara Women’s Jail and later to Viyyur Jail in Kannur in 2015, as part of disciplinary action after it was found that she was using a mobile phone inside the jail.

Sherin’s prison days were rife with controversy, mostly for her shenanigans and often giving threats to jail officers. In 2017, she was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram woman’s jail. She was also one among a few women life term serving convicts to get the luxury of 444 days’ parole in the last six years. Sherin got 345 days of regular parole between March 2012 and January this year and 92 days of emergency parole from August 2012 to October 2017.

Sherin’s name was included in the first list given by the state government to the governor to grant remission of sentences to the prisoners.
