KANNUR: The district conference of CPM in Kannur, the country's strongest unit, will begin in Taliparamba today. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will be present for three days, which is likely to reduce the intensity of criticism. State Secretary MV Govindan will also be present at the conference held in his hometown.
The Chief Minister will inaugurate the representative conference at KKN Pariyaram Hall in Taliparamba in the morning. Central Committee members PK Sreemathy, EP Jayarajan, AK Balan, KK Shailaja, Elamaram Kareem, K Radhakrishnan, P Sathidevi, CS Sujatha, and state secretariat members KK Jayachandran, Anavoor Nagappan, and M Swaraj will also participate.
In a press conference called to explain the district conference proceedings, District Secretary MV Jayarajan had explained that administrative lapses were the reason for the setback in the Lok Sabha elections. MV Jayarajan, who was also a candidate, said that the reason for the heavy defeat was the failure to distribute welfare pensions and the inability to convince the people of the financial siege the central government created. Although there was a wave in favour of the UDF, the reason for the party's defeat in the stronghold by more than one lakh votes can be traced back to the government. The voter turnout in the Lok Sabha elections was about 12 percent lower than in the local body and assembly elections.

M.V. Jayarajan may continue
There are indications that the current district secretary MV Jayarajan will continue in his post. Jayarajan or former MLA TV Rajesh, who was previously the acting secretary, is likely to be elected. More new faces will be added to the district committee.
