THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India has stepped up surveillance against DeepSeek, the Chinese artificial intelligence that answers questions quickly. This comes after reports emerged that DeepSeek AI R1 is leaking private and diplomatic information.
DeepSeek, which overpowered the American AI model Chat GPT within a week of its release, has been banned by Italy. Italy had found that DeepSeek was leaking information that could pose a threat to national security.
The European consumer rights protection group Euro Consumer has received several complaints against the DeepSeek app. DeepSeek's privacy policy also mentions that the information of the app users will be stored in China.
There are also allegations that DeepSeek is avoiding questions related to border issues. There are no answers to India-China relations and the Chinese occupation of Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The response is, “Sorry, that's beyond my current scope. Let's talk about something else.” Experts also say that China may try to spread fake news on such topics through DeepSeek in the future.
Indian model in 10 months
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had announced that India's first AI model will be launched as an alternative to DeepSeek, which has caused the shares of even leading AI companies to plummet. The Indian chatbot will be available in regional languages in addition to Hindi within 10 months. The charge will be less than Rs 100 per hour with a government subsidy. It will help farmers to ask questions about seeds and conduct research at low cost.
