RIYADH: WhatsApp is one of the most popular communication applications in the world. WhatsApp is the first app that everyone owning a smartphone installs. Most use WhatsApp for text messages, voice, and video calls. Although WhatsApp can be used in some Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia, video and voice calls were removed. However, reports say that the feature has returned in Saudi Arabia.
Technology experts said this feature is returning to Saudi Arabia after many years. However, it is not clear whether this is a permanent change or temporary. There has been no official confirmation in this regard. Some have expressed concern about this as the relevant authorities have not issued any official announcement about this.
Technology expert Abdullah Al-Subaie said that this move is part of Saudi Arabia's efforts to increase telecommunications and digital infrastructure and improve communication for users. The voice call feature was available on WhatsApp in 2015. The video call facility also became available in 2016. Saudi Arabia banned voice and video calls as part of some restrictive policies.
There was a rumor that Saudi Arabia had lifted the ban on WhatsApp calls in March 2024. However, Saudi Arabia's Communications, Space and Technology Commission denied this rumor. They reaffirmed that WhatsApp calls cannot be accessed in Saudi Arabia. If the new decision is permanent, it will be a blessing for expatriates including the Malayalees in Saudi Arabia. They will now be able to make phone calls to their home country via WhatsApp.
