PATHANAMTHITTA: A case has been registered against the policemen who carried out a lathi charge against a wedding group, including couples, in Pathanamthitta. The case was registered based on the statements given by the individuals attacked by the police. The Special Branch report had stated that the lathi charge by the police on the wedding group was a serious lapse on the part of the Sub-Inspector. The wedding group was attacked by SI Jinu and his team from the Pathanamthitta police station. The police team arrived at the spot searching for individuals who had caused trouble in front of a bar.
The Special Branch report also mentions that the police mistakenly attacked the wedding party instead of the actual troublemakers. The victims were Kottayam natives returning home after a wedding reception. The incident took place after 11 PM last night near the private bus stand in Pathanamthitta. According to complaints raised by the victims, the police allegedly assaulted them without any provocation.
20 people were travelling in the group’s vehicle. Bar staff had called the police, reporting that a group of people had demanded alcohol when the bar was closing and had refused to leave. The police arrived to find those who had caused trouble at the bar.
"While returning after attending a wedding reception in Adoor, we stopped the vehicle on the roadside to rest. After some time, the police arrived at the spot and chased us away," Sithara, who got injured in the incident, said.
Pathanamthitta DySP S. Nandakumar stated that a thorough investigation would be conducted, and strict action would be taken regarding the incident.
