KOCHI: A migrant worker died in a steamer explosion at a hotel in Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Ernakulam. Of the four injured, two are in serious condition. The incident took place at the popular I'deli Cafe in Kaloor at around 4 pm on Thursday. Hotel employee Sumit, a West Bengal native, died in the incident.
Sumit was seriously injured in the head and got severe burn injuries after hot water fell on his body. Kaipo Nubi and Lulu from Nagaland, Yahian Ali from Assam and Kiran from Odisha are the others injured in the blast. They are undergoing treatment at General Hospital and Lizzy Hospital.
A loud explosion broke the windows of the hotel. Many items were also damaged. Only those working in the kitchen were injured in the incident. As the fire did not spread to the nearby shops, a major disaster was avoided. Following the incident, the police closed the nearby shops. I'deli Café owned by Ashwin Deepak is a popular getaway spot for youths in the region.
A woman, who came to have tea was the only customer at the shop at the time of the incident. The council members suggested that officials check whether the shops at the stadium are licensed. The Greater Kochi Development Authority has banned cooking using gas cylinders in the shops inside the Kaloor Stadium. The forensic team will check whether safety standards were met. If not, the Palarivattom police will file a case against the hotel owner.
