IMPHAL: The assembly session which was to begin on Monday was called off in Manipur after Chief Minister Biren Singh announced his resignation today. According to reports, a presidential rule is likely in the state.
Biren Singh resigned after reaching Delhi on Sunday and meeting Union Minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda. The resignation was submitted in person to Governor Ajay Bhalla along with some ministers in the evening.
The budget session was about to take place on Monday when Singh announced his resignation. The Congress was mulling ways to move a no-confidence motion against the Chief Minister on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Manipur will directly go to Delhi and apprise the President about the political situation in the state. 12 MLAs from the ruling party strongly demanded Biren Singh's resignation. There are reports that these MLAs have threatened with resignation if Biren Singh were to continue in his post.
In the wake of riots in Mnaipur, there were growing demands from ruling party MLAs to change the chief minister to take the agitating ethnic tribes into confidence. Despite completing many talks, the central leadership backed Biren Singh to continue in the post. MLAs from the Kuki community of Manipur have met the central leadership several times before, demanding that the chief minister be replaced.
