THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Disaster Management Authority has sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for Wayanad, where incidents of wildlife attacks have been on the rise. The funds were allocated based on a request from the Wayanad District Collector and will be handed over to the district administration. Given the increasing wildlife attacks in the region, the funds will also be utilized for clearing abandoned weedy areas bordering the forest. The decision to allocate these funds had been made earlier.
On January 24, an Adivasi woman named Radha was killed by a man-eating tiger. In a meeting held on January 26, the District Collector requested funds to tackle the issue of wildlife attacks, leading to this allocation.
Meanwhile, Wayanad is set to observe a hartal tomorrow in protest against the government's inaction in curbing continuous wildlife attacks. The UDF Wayanad District Committee has called for the strike. UDF District Chairman KK Ahmed Haji and Convener PT Gopalakurup stated that despite the frequent loss of human lives due to wildlife attacks, the government's lack of decisive action has led to the protest.
