KOTTAYAM: February 10, 2025—It was his 20th birthday. Filled with hope, he boarded a vehicle from the hilltops of Idukki to Kottayam Government Nursing College. However, that night turned into a nightmare. Around 10 PM, a group of senior students, behaving like criminals, barged in and demanded money as his birthday treat. When he refused to give them money to buy alcohol, they suddenly pressed a knife against his neck. What followed was unimaginable cruelty.
They stripped him partially and tied him to a bed, brutally torturing him inch by inch. As he writhed in pain, his tormentors laughed mercilessly. They threatened to kill him if he told anyone. With no other option, he informed his parents—leading to a police case. However, fear still haunts him. What if they get released tomorrow? What will happen to him then? He wants to study, build a career, and move forward. He is now preparing himself mentally for the journey ahead. His parents and relatives stand by him, offering their support. Many who were deeply pained by the inhuman cruelty have reached out with words of comfort. Everyone believes he will overcome this trauma and come back stronger.
No more suspects
The police believe that only the five arrested students are involved in the Kottayam Government Nursing College ragging case. A detailed investigation will be conducted at the college and hostel. It is indicated that the students are gearing up to lodge two more complaints. Based on this, the accused will be taken into police custody.
Police have sought the help of the cyber cell for a detailed examination of the video evidence. The suspects’ phones have been sent for forensic analysis. The Human Rights Commission has also taken up the case. Judicial member K. Baijunath has directed the District Police Chief to submit a report within two weeks. The principal of the nursing college has also been asked to provide an explanation. The case will be reviewed in the next sitting in Kottayam.
Meanwhile, the Medical Education Department has also launched an investigation into the incident. A seven-member team led by the Joint Director visited the college. Based on their findings, further actions—including expelling the accused students—will be decided. If there is evidence of negligence by college authorities, disciplinary action will be taken against them as well.
