NEW DELHI: Gyanesh Kumar has been appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner. This comes as Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar retires today.
The selection committee, comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, met yesterday. It is reported that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister have come to a consensus on a name. Gyanesh Kumar will have a term as Chief Election Commissioner till January 26, 2029. The incumbent Election Commissioner is a 1988 batch Kerala cadre IAS officer.
