KOTTAYAM: A family came forward against Kottayam Medical College in connection with the death of a three-year-old girl. The dead Aparnika, daughter of Vishnu Soman of Kattappana, died while undergoing treatment for stomach ache. They alleged medical negligence for her death. Hospital authorities said there has been no lapse from their side.
The child died at around 8.30 am yesterday. She was admitted to the children's hospital on Sunday evening. She was shifted to the medical college at 2 am on Monday after her health deteriorated. She had sought treatment at the hospital on the 11th due to severe stomach pain. The parents said the hospital authorities had mentioned that she was fine after initial tests.
However, after taking medicine on reaching home, she did not show any improvement and was admitted to a private hospital in Kattappana on Sunday morning. When the pain became severe, she was brough back to the children's hospital in the evening. Met the doctor at home and was referred to the medical college. However, her mother said that she did not get proper treatment. Although gave her drip, even half of it was not over by 7 am the next morning. She went to the nurses room and complained but they did not pay heed to it.
On Tuesday morning, doctors examined her and found her condition to be serious and shifted her to the ICU. She died soon. Hospital authorities said the cause of death was heart attack. However, her parents said that doctors had suspected food poisoning. They filed a complaint with the Kattappana police. More clarity will be obtained only after the postmortem today.
