KOZHIKODE: Education Minister V Sivankutty has ordered a detailed investigation into the suicide of Aleena Benny, a teacher of St Joseph’s LP School in Kodenchery. The minister said further steps will be taken after the investigation report is obtained. The Catholic Teachers Guild demanded that a comprehensive investigation be conducted and held the state education department responsible for delaying her appointment.
Aleena worked under corporate management. Aleena, who was working in a school in Kattippara for five years, has been working in Kodenchery for the past one year. Aleena was not made permanent and did not get salary also. Her father Benny said that she committed suicide due to depression.
Aleena Benny was given permanent appointment from 2021 in the vacancy caused by the resignation of a teacher who was on long-term leave, but the education department authorities were not ready to accept the appointment, citing reservation for differently-abled people. The Catholic Teachers Malabar Regional Committee said in a release that she was transferred to a regular post at Kodenchery LP School following the request of Aleena and her father.
The school management said Aleena Benny was given permanent appointment and that no donation was accepted for this. Aleena, who committed suicide, was a native of Kattippara panchayat. She had been working at Holy Family LP School in Kattippara for four years.
