NEW DELHI: BJP's Rekha Gupta was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena administered the oath at a grand ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan. Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda and others were present at the ceremony.

Rekha Gupta is the fourth woman Chief Minister to rule the national capital after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit and Atishi. She is also the only woman Chief Minister in an NDA-ruled state. The 50-year-old Rekha belongs to the Bania community. Her organizational skills and support by RSS were crucial in her rise to the post of Chief Minister.

The last time the BJP ruled Delhi was in 1998, and then also it had a woman Chief Minister. However, Sushma Swaraj ruled only for 52 days then. The BJP acknowledges the crucial support they received from women voters in winning Delhi after 27 years.

Apart from Rekha Gupta and Parvesh Sahib, Kapil Sharma, Manjinder Sirsa, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh and Ravinder Indraj Singh were also sworn in to the Delhi cabinet. The BJP also nominated former Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta as the new Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.
