KOZHIKODE: The Human Rights Commission has registered a case in the incident of a teacher committing suicide in Kattippara. The Judicial Member of the Human Rights Commission, K. Baijunath, ordered the Director of the Department of Public Education to submit a report on the incident within two weeks. This case is decided to be considered at the next sitting to be held at Kozhikode on the 26th next month.
The deceased is Aleena Benny (29), a teacher from Kattippara, Kozhikode. The body was found hanging inside the house. She was a teacher at St. Joseph's LP School, Kodenchery. Aleena's family alleged that the mental anguish over not receiving a salary for the last six years led to the suicide.
Aleena worked under a Thamarassery Diocese Corporate Management. Aleena, who previously worked in a school in Kattippara for five years, has been working in Kodencherry for the past year. Aleena had not secured a permanent position or received a salary. Aleena had been mentally upset over this for some time, says her father Benny.
Even though Aleena Benny was given a permanent position in 2021, following the resignation of a teacher who was on long-term leave, the education department authorities were not ready to accept the appointment, citing reservations for differently-abled people. According to a press release issued by the Catholic Teachers Malabar Regional Committee, she was transferred to a regular post at Kodanchery LP School as requested by her and her father. The school management says that Aleena Benny was given a permanent appointment and that no donation was received for this.
