THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has introduced relaxations in local body regulations to streamline the establishment of industries. As per the revised rules, enterprises classified under two divisions of Category One no longer require panchayat approval to commence operations. Production units listed under the Green and White categories of the Pollution Control Board can now operate with just a registration, while those in the Red and Orange categories will still need prior approval from the panchayat.

However, uncertainty remains over whether liquor manufacturing units will benefit from this exemption. When asked about the classification of breweries, the minister stated that it required further verification. Meanwhile, officials from the industries and excise departments clarified that distilleries fall under the Red category. A press release from the Local Self-Government Minister’s office did not specify the classification of liquor manufacturing units.

The opposition and the local panchayat have alleged that the amendment was introduced to favour a liquor production unit in Elappully. However, the Industries Minister denied these claims, asserting that the changes were not made to benefit any specific company. He emphasized that the revisions were based on the recommendations of a government-appointed committee aimed at fostering an industry-friendly environment in the state.
