MUMBAI: A case has been registered against four Wikipedia editors for not removing controversial content about Sambhaji, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire. Despite sending nearly ten emails and legal notices, the American company did not make any modifications to the content, prompting the Maharashtra Cyber Cell to take legal action.
The Wikimedia Foundation, based in California, which operates the free online encyclopedia, was issued the notices. However, apart from an automated response, no steps were taken to address the objectionable content. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis intervened and instructed the police to act on the matter.
The police demanded the removal of the incorrect information from Wikipedia, citing that it could lead to law and order issues in the state. However, the company did not respond. It is noteworthy that the case was filed while the movie Chhaava, featuring Vicky Kaushal as Sambhaji, continues to be screened successfully in Maharashtra and other regions.
