KOCHI: Customs has seized hybrid cannabis worth one crore, which was smuggled through a foreign post office in Kochi.
Savio Abraham (37), a native of Kakkanad, who brought hybrid cannabis from Thailand, has been arrested. Customs has said that this is the biggest drug smuggling case ever committed through foreign post offices. The parcel arrived from Thailand on the 18th with a fake address. The cannabis was hidden in cornflakes packets. The customs officials at the post office were monitoring such parcels based on confidential information. When an unaddressed box containing food items was noticed, customs officials opened it and found hybrid cannabis and other items to monitor it.
As part of the investigation, the Customs sent the same box as a dummy parcel from the Foreign Post Office on the 20th. It was after Savio received this dummy parcel that he was arrested. It was confirmed during the investigation that he had brought the cannabis. 30 grams of hybrid cannabis and 50 grams of cannabis were seized from his house. The target customers were students and youth. Crucial information about the gang to which the accused belongs has been obtained from his mobile phone. Customs informed that a detailed investigation into the case is underway. The accused has been remanded.
