asha-workers-protest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With songs and slogans, the ASHA workers' protest has entered its 14th day with unwavering determination. The indefinite strike, led by the Kerala ASHA Health Workers Association, saw the participation of several political and social leaders yesterday.

Former Union Minister V. Muraleedharan demanded that the Chief Minister hold discussions with the ASHA workers. He stated that the central government had allocated Rs 915 crore to Kerala under the National Health Mission, but the funds were delayed due to non-compliance with guidelines. He also criticized the Chief Minister, saying that he seemed more concerned about K.V. Thomas staying at Kerala House than about the struggles of ASHA workers who support the health sector.

MLA Rahul Mamkootathil blamed Pinarayi Vijayan for the dire situation that forced ASHA workers to take to the streets. Other leaders who expressed solidarity with the protesters included MLAs M. Vincent, writer Dr J. Devika, Prof. K.P. Saji, NGO Association leader Chavara Jayakumar, SDPI state general secretary Joy Arakkkal, Women’s League state vice president Safina Mattappally, former Paravur municipal vice chairman Shuhaib, Indian Labour Party (Democratic) representative Girishan, and senior advocate Sudhakarakurup.
