NEW DELHI: Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Saraswati Vihar killing of two people during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The verdict was pronounced by special judge Kaveri Baweja. The court had earlier found Sajjan Kumar guilty. The court had said that Sajjan Kumar was part of the riots and led the mob.
The life sentence was given in the case of the murder of a father and son in Saraswati Vihar, Delhi, on November 1, 1984 during the anti-Sikh riots. Jaswant Singh and Tarundeep Singh were killed. The case, registered at Punjabi Bagh police station, was later taken over by a Special Investigation Team. The court had said on December 16, 2021, that Sajjan Kumar was prima facie guilty.
The riots broke out on October 31, 1984, after the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her Sikh bodyguards. The prosecution had alleged that a group of armed men looted and destroyed Sikh property on a large scale to avenge Indira Gandhi's murder. Jaswant Singh and his son were killed in the meantime. The assailants looted and set fire to their house. The complainant is Jaswant Singh's wife.
