LAHORE: Afghanistan produced an upset defeating former champions England in a Champions Trophy group match. With this defeat, England have been knocked out of the tournament.
Chasing a target of 326 runs set by Afghanistan who batted first, England could only score 317 runs in 49.5 overs. Joe Root's century(120 runs off 111 balls) ended up futile.
Chasing a target of 326 runs, Afghanistan shocked England at the start. Even in the first six overs, England lost two crucial wickets, of Philip Salt 12(13) and Jamie Smith 9(13). Ben Duckett and Joe Root's partnership of 68 runs took the score to 98. Rashid Khan broke the partnership by trapping Duckett in front of the wicket 38(45). At this stage, England smelled danger, but captain Jos Buttler put on 83 runs with Root's 38(42) to take the team score past 200.
Despite fighting back, England losing wickets at crucial intervals broke the momentum within the team. England were just 39 runs away from victory when Root returned with 120 (111) in the 46th over.
With Archer and Overton at the crease and three wickets remaining in the last three overs, England were just 25 runs away from the target. Rashid Khan missed an easy catch to dismiss Archer in the 48th over bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai. But on the fifth ball, Nabi caught Overton at deep long-on for 32(28) and the match became exciting again. England scored nine runs in the over with one boundary.
Fazalhaq Farooqi came to bowl the 49th over. With just one wicket remaining in the last over, England are still 13 runs away from the target. Adil Rashid and Mark Wood were at the crease. Rashid scored a run on the first ball off deep long off. Rashid tried but in vain to push the game forward and had to give up in the fifth bowl. Afghanistan thus created history by toppling yet another giant of the game.
