THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is set to rectify ineffective police officers by allowing the public to evaluate their behaviour and efficiency. Officers who fail to meet the minimum required score will face strict action. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the new system today.

QR codes will be installed at all police stations and major police offices, allowing citizens to scan and rate officers on their mobile devices. The rating options include Excellent, Good, Average, Poor, and Very Poor. Citizens can also report issues such as refusal to accept complaints, unnecessary delays in investigations, and lack of responsiveness. The ratings and complaints will be received directly by the District Police Chief.

This initiative is aimed at eliminating misconduct, bribery, and case manipulations within the police force. The Cyber Division has developed the rating system, providing citizens with an easy way to file complaints without having to visit police stations.

The system will be integrated with the Pol-App and Thuna platforms, where all ratings and complaints will be recorded. Since district police chiefs will directly monitor the feedback, the chances of manipulation are minimal.

Officers who engage in misconduct or suppressing complaints will face warnings, transfers, or suspensions. If deliberate negligence in investigations is proven, they could even be dismissed from service.

Courteous behaviour is not generosity

Government’s guidelines for police conduct:

  1. Always maintain a respectful attitude
  2. Do not use force
  3. Do not show favoritism or bias
  4. Do not dismiss complaints
  5. Should give top priority to women's safety

Since 2016, 108 police officers have been dismissed until May 2024 due to their involvement in criminal cases.
