THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the summer heat intensifies, the demand for air conditioners (ACs) is soaring. Last year, around 1.5 lakh AC units were sold between March and May. This year, retailers expect even higher sales, judging by the increasing customer rush.
However, electricity costs remain a major concern for buyers. In Kerala, nearly 80% of ACs sold are one-ton units with a three-star energy rating, mainly due to their affordability, with an average price of Rs 24,000. However, these units consume more electricity. Additionally, this summer, nighttime electricity usage will incur a 25% surcharge.
A one-ton AC running for 12 hours consumes about six units of electricity daily, adding up to 180 units per month. Given that the average household electricity consumption is around 250 units per month, AC usage could significantly increase bi-monthly electricity bills.
To minimize electricity costs, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) suggests the following measures:
Pre-cool the room: Turn on the AC two hours before bedtime and use a fan for circulation. Keep doors and windows tightly shut to retain the cool air.
Reduce indoor heat: Paint exterior walls and the terrace with white paint, install shades on windows, and plant trees around the house to lower indoor temperatures.
Optimize AC usage for energy efficiency
