THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Election Commission has said that if voters in different states get the same voter card numbers, it cannot be considered fake.
The Electoral Photo Identity Card numbers of some voters may be the same. However, other details including the assembly constituency and polling booth are different, the Commission has pointed out.
'Anyone can vote if their name is in the electoral roll of their constituency, regardless of the EPIC number. An EPIC number or Electoral Photo Identity Card number is necessary for Indian citizens to participate in elections. It is a unique alpha-numeric identifier assigned to each registered voter. As part of the process of migrating the electoral roll database of all states to the "ERONET" platform, some electors from different states and union territories have been allotted the same EPIC number. This has led to some state chief electoral officers using the same EPIC alphanumeric series and allocating duplicate EPIC numbers to voters in assembly constituencies in different states, the Election Commission said.
