venjarammoodu-mass-murder

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The medical board has confirmed that Afaan, the accused in the Venjarammoodu mass murder case, does not have any mental health issues. He committed the murders with full awareness. The board also indicated that he could be discharged from the hospital within two days if his physical condition improved. Afaan is currently being kept in a cell at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. The Venjarammoodu police are expected to file a custody application today in connection with the case. The Pangode police had registered Afaan's arrest in the case of the murder of his grandmother, Salma Beevi. He will be transferred to jail once he is discharged from the hospital, after which he will be charged in two more cases.

Afaan repeatedly told the police that financial burdens were the primary reason behind his decision to kill everyone and take his own life. He explained that if he died alone, his younger brother and mother would have no one to support them and would suffer, which he could not bear. He also mentioned that he could not leave his lover alone. Additionally, he stated that his paternal uncle, aunt, and grandmother did not understand his family's struggles or offer any help, leading him to believe that they, too, did not deserve to live. It was confirmed that Afaan had consumed alcohol on the day of the incident. However, the blood test report to determine whether he had used any drugs is yet to be received.

Afaan also revealed the previous day that he had planned to kill three more close relatives. According to the police, Afaan had planned to kill his mother's relatives—a mother and daughter living in Thattathumala—and his uncle living in Venjarammoodu. However, he reportedly lost his mental strength after murdering his younger brother. Otherwise, he would have killed the other relatives as well. Afaan made this revelation to a psychiatrist at the Medical College Hospital, who then informed the police.
