KOLLAM: CPM state secretary MV Govindan said that if there are people who drink, they will be expelled from the party. MV Govindan told a press conference that the party's stance is not to drink alcohol and that none of them have had a single drop yet.

We all came from the philosophical view that we will not drink alcohol and that we will not smoke cigarettes. When we came through the 'Balasangham', the student movement and the youth movement, the first pledge was that we would avoid all such things in our personal lives. We all work by incorporating the values of the Renaissance movement, the national movement, and the communist movement that followed it. Kerala is a land with lakhs of such Communist Party members. So, we should strongly oppose drunkards, make them an organisational issue, and expel or correct them. We have adopted that stance. Govindan clarified that he would continue to uphold it.

He also said that drug use should be strongly opposed. A sense should be developed to oppose and defeat it. Effective intervention to create such a public consciousness should be led by the party and class-based mass organisations. M.V. Govindan also requested everyone to join hands in this struggle, beyond party politics.
