THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the wake of frequent incidents of violence among teenage children, the ruling party and the opposition put forth various measures to control the drug menace. A student was beaten to death in Thamarassery, Kozhikode by his classmates, shocking the conscience of citizens.

The Chief Minister said that teachers, parents, and the general public need to come together to intervene against drug abuse.

Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan said that a proper action plan is required. He demanded that the IGs be given the responsibility for this after dividing the state into two regions.

The main reason is the use of drugs and that drugs should be prevented. The ruling and opposition members took a unanimous stand regarding this.

The Chief Minister said that the younger generation is restless and that a wide campaign against drug abuse will be organised in schools. He added that the syllabus needs to be changed.

Ramesh Chennithala, who was a former home minister, sought permission for the emergency resolution.

The issue of movies and drugs, which incites youngsters into violence, was debated.

The opposition accused the government, which has been ruling Kerala for nine years, of being incompetent. The ruling party defended itself by citing the measures taken. The resolution was rejected with the permission of the opposition.

2854 arrests in a week

From February 22 to the 1st of this month, 2854 people were arrested in the drug hunt conducted by the police under the name Operation D-Hunt. 2762 cases were registered. Drugs such as MDMA (1.312 kg), cannabis (153.56 kg), hashish oil (18.15 g), brown sugar (1.855 g), and heroin (13.06 g) were seized. A list of drug smugglers will be prepared, and special measures will be taken to prevent their crimes. It will be ensured that drugs do not enter the state from other countries. Strong security will be maintained in border areas and check posts. Investigations are underway. Enforcement operations are also being conducted using intelligence and shadow systems to gather secret information. There are border patrols, striking force, and highway patrols that operate 24 hours a day. Checks are being conducted at railway stations and trains with the cooperation of the RPF, and intoxicating substances are being seized.
