THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Travancore Devaswom Board has said that elephant processions should be limited to important ceremonies in temples. A recommendation in this regard will be submitted to the government. The recommendation will be made after discussing with other Devaswom Boards and thantris of the temple. This will be in a way that does not disrupt temple rituals.
The move comes in the wake of increasing accidents caused by elephants in temples. Elephants can be paraded during important ceremonies like Pallivetta and Aarattu. It will be proposed that Jeevitha, temple chariots, and such can be used for other ceremonies.
It will also be demanded that elephants be excluded from Sapthaham, Navaham, and Vahimel Parayeduppu. There is also disagreement over taking elephants out in the sun. Another important demand is to limit the number of elephants in festivals in temples where space is limited.
DJs near elephants should also be banned
The government will also be asked to impose a strict ban on DJ performances and laser shows near elephants. This is because it can cause elephants to become aggressive.
"Along with the protection of rituals, the lives of believers are also of utmost importance to the board. Elephants cannot be excluded from rituals that have existed for centuries. If the elephant procession is done reasonably, accidents can be avoided."
