BENGALURU: Actress Ranya Rao’s photos in police custody are being circulated on social media. In the photos, the actress’s face looks swollen, with visible bruises near her eyelids, giving rise to speculation of custody torture. Many implored the Karnataka Women's Commission to take a case.

The Women's Commission said they could not investigate the incident without receiving an official complaint. Women's Commission Chairperson Nagalakshmi Chaudhary clarified that they had no authority to investigate without someone filing a complaint.

“Nobody has the right to take law into their hands. Custody torture is a redundant practice and shall not be entertained. Let the law take its course. If Ranya files a complaint about this, we will investigate. We will conduct an investigation and submit a report. The commission will do everything possible in Ranya's complaint. She has not filed a complaint yet," the chairman clarified.

Ranya was caught at Bengaluru International Airport with gold worth Rs 12 crore on Tuesday. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 14.8 kilograms of gold. Ranya tried to smuggle some of the gold by wearing it while hiding the rest in her clothes.
