THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Electricity consumption is soaring in the scorching summer. Daily consumption has been above 10 crore units since the 4th of this month.

The main reason is the night temperature rising by two to three degrees Celsius. The heat will increase further in the coming days and continue till May.

KSEB estimates that daily consumption may increase up to 12 crore units. Electricity availability has been ensured from Punjab, Himachal and Andhra to avoid power cuts. There are also other short-term contracts.

The highest consumption in a single day in the state was 11.59 crore units on May 3 last year. Consumption crossed 10 crore units on May 4 this month. Consumption increased to 10.17 crore units on May 5 and 10.27 crore units on May 7. Only 1.78 crore units of electricity are generated in the state. The rest is brought in from outside.

Won't be shocked if careful

• The rate for night consumption is 25 percent higher but there is a 10 percent reduction during the day
• Consumers can reduce the impact on the electricity bill if they make the most of this benefit
• AC should be adjusted scientifically. Washing machine, mixer, iron box, and induction cooker should be operated only during the day
