OTTAWA: Mark Carney (59), an economist and former governor of the Bank of England and Bank of Canada, will be the new Prime Minister of Canada. Carney won the leadership election held by the Liberal Party to find a successor to Justin Trudeau with 86 percent of the vote.
Carney will succeed Justin Trudeau, who has severely strained relations with India by encouraging Khalistanists. The new prime minister's stance is therefore important for India and Canada.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland was the main opponent in the election. 152,000 party members participated in the election. With the victory, Carney assumed the leadership of the Liberal Party. He will soon take office as prime minister. Carney announced that he will fight against US President Donald Trump's tariff threats.
Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau gave his farewell speech with tears in his eyes. Trudeau said he was extremely proud to have led Canada for 9 years. His daughter, Ella-Grace Margaret Trudeau, also came to the stage in support.
Trudeau became prime minister in 2015. Trudeau's failed immigration policy and domestic problems, including rising prices, alienated him from the people. His anti-India stance led to severe criticism within his own party.
Carney in the midst of US threats:
1. Carney's main challenge is the US trade war.
2. Trump's tariff restrictions must be overcome.
3. Trump's threat to make Canada a US state
4. The country's inflation and immigration rates must be reduced.
5. The country's deteriorating relations with India must be put on the right track.
