NEW DELHI: CPM state committee member and Rajya Sabha member John Brittas said that he has not praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shashi Tharoor MP. Tharoor had criticized when the CPM earlier said Russia should not be blocked. John Brittas clarified that he had exposed Tharoor's change of stance now. Modi's continued purchase of crude oil from Russia was the right stance. Modi did one right thing even though he made many mistakes.
John Brittas came forward supporting Tharoor's statement the other day. Left parties had previously said that India should not give in to pressure from Western countries. Tharoor should congratulate the left parties. Narendra Modi government's decision to import oil from Russia without giving in to Western pressure is welcomed. John Brittas responded yesterday that Tharoor is a valuable leader of the Congress.
Tharoor's statement
‘In a parliamentary discussion in February 2022, I had criticized the stand India had adopted. My criticism was based on violations of the UN Charter, violations of the principle of borders, and violations of Ukraine's sovereignty, all of which should be condemned when any country violates them.
However, after three years, I realized my stand was wrong. The policy shows that we now have an Indian Prime Minister who can embrace both the President of Ukraine and the President of Russia within a two-week span and gain acceptance from both sides. India is now in a position to work towards permanent peace, something very few countries can achieve.’
