NAYPYIDAW: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Myanmar today, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The epicentre was located near Mandalay, approximately 17.2 km away, at a depth of 10 km. Tremors were also felt in neighbouring Thailand, leading to significant damage there.
At least 59 people have died as a result of the earthquake in Myanmar and 4 in Thailand. More than 250 individuals are reported to be injured. The first earthquake occurred at 12:50 PM local time, followed by a strong aftershock measuring 6.8 magnitude shortly after.
In Myanmar, the impact has been devastating. Infrastructure damage includes collapsed buildings and bridges. In Thailand, a building collapsed in Bangkok, trapping 43 people inside. Seven individuals have been rescued with injuries, and authorities have declared a state of emergency in the capital. In response to the crisis, metro and rail services have been temporarily suspended to ensure public safety.
The earthquake occurred along the Sagaing Fault, a tectonic boundary known for its seismic activity. Shocking video footage of the earthquake has also emerged. Footage has emerged of a multi-storey building under construction, houses, etc., collapsing to the ground. People can also be seen screaming and running in the footage.
