KOCHI: A tragic case has emerged in Irumpanam, where a young woman, MS Sangeetha (26), reportedly took her own life following alleged abuse by her husband. Sangeetha, the daughter of Sathyan from Moonnamkutti Parambu, Chithrapuzha, was found hanging recently. Her family has accused her husband, Abhilash of Chakkuparambu House, Thiruvankulam, of repeatedly assaulting her and demanding money.
Sangeetha and Abhilash got married five years ago. Since it was a love marriage, no money or gold was given as a wedding gift from Sangeetha's house. Abhilash used to constantly harass Sangeetha, citing this, demanding money. Days before Sangeetha died, he started beating her, demanding Rs. 3 lakh. The family also alleges that he beat Sangeetha for several hours the day before her death.
Sangeetha had sought treatment at a hospital after Abhilash had beaten her with a helmet, which resulted in the bridge of her nose getting broken. Initially, relatives had intervened and held mediation talks with Abhilash when he beat Sangeetha. Sangeetha was in charge of looking after a mentally challenged child near her house. Abhilash used to come here and create ruckus. Earlier, after Sangeetha's family verbally filed a complaint to the police, the police gave warning to Abhilash. The relatives have filed a complaint with the Hill Palace police over suspicions regarding Sangeetha's death. Sangeetha has two children studying in LKG and Anganwadi. Following the complaint from the relatives, an inquest was conducted on the body under the leadership of the RDO. After the postmortem at Ernakulam Medical College, the body was cremated at the Irumbanam crematorium.
