THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The runway recarpeting at Thiruvananthapuram airport has been completed to international standards. Daytime flight services, which were restricted during the work, will now operate normally starting today.
The work involved recarpeting a section of the runway that is 3.4 kilometers long and 60 meters wide. It took 75 days to finish the project, and about 50,000 metric tons of asphalt were used.
Additionally, 5.5 lakh square meters of graded strip area have been upgraded as part of the project. This runway recarpeting is the fastest such project being completed in South India. The work started on January 14 and was carried out for just 9 hours each day.
Despite the construction, an average of 80 flights operated daily on the same runway, and over nine lakh passengers traveled during this time. A total area of 2.40 lakh square meters was successfully recarpeted. The runway's previous recarpeting was done in 2015.
