KOVALAM: A 16-year-old drowned after falling into a quarry pond after the Water Authority tank overflowed. The deceased is Mithun Krishna, residing in Christunilayam, Muttakkad KS Road, Kovalam. He is the son of Krishnakumar and Nisha, natives of Uriyakode, Kattakada. He is a Plus One student at Kottukaal Maruthoorkonam PTM School. The incident took place yesterday evening.
Water had been overflowing from the overhead tank of the Water Authority near the Christunilayam orphanage since Saturday. Subsequently, most of the area was underwater by yesterday morning. Mithun and another inmate of the orphanage, Benin, were trying to wash their feet in the water-filled rock pond when Mithun slipped into the pond. Benin went into the pond but could not save his friend as he sank to the depths. Later, Mithun was pulled out by the orphanage and locals. He was immediately taken to the Vizhinjam Primary Health Centre, but his life could not be saved. The body was shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Mithun was brought to the Christunilayam by his mother along with his sister, Mridula, after he became estranged from his father in December.
