Just nine days after its release, Mohanlal’s latest movie, 'Empuraan’ is all set to be crowned the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever. The domestic collection record of the movie has already surpassed Rs 90.78 crore, while the worldwide collection is at Rs 250 crore as per the makers. The numbers indicate that, ‘Empuraan’ despite being riddled in a controversy, has broken the record set by ‘Manjummel Boys’.
Kerala proved to be a catalyst for this success by providing Rs 53.05 crore for the movie. The Tamil and Telugu versions are running moderately with 13.72% and 8.43% occupancy. The Hindi version is the odd one in the pack, not able to make a mark.
With more than 250 crores worldwide collection in 10 days, ‘Empuraan’ is moments away from taking the laurel of the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever.
Mired in controversy over its contested portrayal of the Gujrat riots of 2002, ‘Empuraan’ had to undergo 24 cuts in an unprecedented re-censoring. The controversy loomed large after BJP leaders came with cryptic posts admonishing the movie. However, the campaign did little to stop people from flocking to theatres in Kerala.
Despite being rated as a mediocre movie by reviewers, Empuraan's massive success is leaving many puzzled.
