PORT BLAIR: An American vlogger, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov from Arizona, was arrested by Indian police after he tried to reach feared North Sentinel Island on India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The local court sent Polyakov into 14-day judicial custody over the incident. The case will be considered again on the 17th. The crime is punishable by up to five years in prison. Officials have already alerted the US embassy about the matter.
The tribal people in North Sentinel Island have been living detached from the rest of the world for the past thousand years. The tribals use bow and arrow to hunt animals inside the lush green jungle and will be ubiquitously roaming around in search of outsiders.
In 2018, an American missionary who reached the reclusive island in an attempt to fawn the islanders had to endure the darkest fate. Upon his entry into the island, the American citizen was shot with an arrow and was brutally killed. Indian ships often circle 5 km away from the island to prevent any outsider intrusion.
Polyakov used a boat and GPS navigation to reach the island. Upon setting his foot on the island, Polyakov blew a whistle to attract the islander's attention. Luckily, nobody came to the spot. He spent one hour on the island and then left a diet coke can and a coconut as a ‘parting gift’.
While returning, Polyakov was spotted by local fishermen, who informed the authorities. The American was arrested in Port Blair. Polcie said that Polyakov had planned the visit for many days and executed everything meticulously.
