KOCHI: Assistant Prison Officer was seriously injured in an attack by brothers, who are remanded in custody at the Kakkanad District Jail. The incident occurred at 3:30 pm yesterday when the brothers were brought to the guard office after complaints of inmate assaults.
Assistant Prison Officer Akhil Mohanan (30) suffered a fractured bone in his right hand and was treated at the Medical College Hospital. The attackers, Ajith Ganesan (28) and Akhil Ganesan (26), are from Ambalamedu, Karimukal. They face multiple criminal charges, including vandalizing a police station and assaulting a police driver. They were remanded in February.
Earlier in their cell in A Block, the brothers beat inmate Shamnad and injured Mohammed Shah by hitting his nose. When they were called to the guard office to be questioned about this, Ajith turned violent. He used a blade to injure all over the body. During this time, Akhil was also called to this place since he created disturbance by banging his head on the cell’s grill. They then tried to assault the officers, but Akhil Mohanan intervened. During the struggle, Akhil fell and broke his hand.
