KOCHI: Police have launched an investigation into the midnight clash between lawyers and students from Maharaja's College. A request for CCTV footage has been given to the Ernakulam District Court to uncover the true cause.
Lawyers claim the clash began after students were expelled for trespassing during the Bar Association's annual function at the court premises. However, students argue that those who used the Maharaja's College gate to access the hostel were attacked. Thirty individuals have been identified as accused across three cases, but no arrests have been made yet. The complainants’ phones remain switched off, their statements haven't been recorded, and it is unclear who attacked them.
In the cases related to the policemen injured during the clash, the accused remain unidentified. Reports suggest attempts are being made to settle cases filed by both parties involved. The incident occurred around midnight on Thursday. Despite a complaint being filed by the principal regarding lawyers allegedly throwing stones and liquor bottles into the college, no case has been registered. Stones and bottles reportedly landed in the Malayalam section's classroom.
During a march led by the Bar Association to the City Police Commissioner's office, demanding the students' immediate arrest, stones were also thrown. After the clash, there were reports that outsiders had been banned from the canteen on the District Court premises, but officials clarified that no such decision had been made.
