CHENNAI: Seven people have been arrested in the theft case at the harbour owned by Adani Group. Silver bars worth Rs 9 crore were stolen from the container that arrived at Adani Port at Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu. 600 kg of silver was seized from those arrested. The accused were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. Avadi City Police said that there are other accused in the case and investigations have been intensified to find them.
Silver weighing 922 kg was lost. It was brought to Chennai from London on March 30. The goods were brought in two containers. One contained 20 tonnes and the other 19 tonnes. The goods unloaded from the container were taken to the company's warehouse in Sriperumbudur on April 3 and were found to be underweight during routine inspection. Police investigation revealed that the container was opened twice before being loaded onto a lorry after being imported from London. The goods were imported from London by a company operating in Sriperumbudur.
When the GPS system was checked, it was found that the container was opened for two minutes once and for 16 minutes the second time. The company manager later searched the container and confirmed that the theft had taken place. The police then arrested the accused after an investigation checking CCTV footage.
