KOCHI: You don’t have to look to Tamil Nadu anymore for good watermelons - Kerala’s Kudumbashree is now growing native, harmful-pesticide-free watermelons right here in the state. This is part of the Kudumbashree Farm Livelihood Project, under a campaign called 'Venal Madhuram.' Harvesting has already started in the district, and these watermelons are being sold through Kudumbashree markets.
The watermelon farms are spread across certain blocks in the district, covering about 98 acres. They’re selling at Rs. 25 per kilogram. Around 183 women, organized into 153 Joint Liability Groups (JLGs), are involved in growing these watermelons. Since these are native varieties, Kudumbashree is happy to see them selling fast.
The cultivation started back in December and January. This is actually the first time Kudumbashree is growing watermelons all over the state at the same time. The project runs through Kudumbashree’s JLG farmers, aiming to boost local watermelon farming and make sure people get fresh, safe watermelons during summer.
Farmers got financial help too—up to Rs. 25,000 as a revolving fund through the Community Development Societies (CDS). This money helps them prepare the land and buy seeds or seedlings. They pay it back from their profits just one month after harvest.
In the district, there are 102 CDS units, with 82 in rural areas. The fund amount is Rs. 25,000. There are 153 JLGs involved, and 184 farmers are part of the project.
The watermelon varieties they’re growing include Sugar Baby, Pakeesa, Sugar Queen, Jubilee King, Yellow Munch, and Orange Delight.
