PAHALGAM: The death toll in the terrorist attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir has risen to five. Unconfirmed reports say that five of the eight injured are in critical condition. Security forces have reached the area and started a search operation. The terrorists opened fire on the tourists who had gone for a trek to Baisaran. ANI reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Home Minister Amit Shah to reach the site of the terrorist attack.
The attack took place at 2.30 pm on Tuesday. It is reported that there were three attackers. Three of the injured are locals. Jammu and Kashmir Police said that the firing took place in the Baisaran valley of Pahalgam. The area is not accessible by vehicle. It is accessible only by foot or horse.

There has been a significant increase in the number of tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir in recent times. It is in this context that the attack targeting tourists took place. Police and locals say that the place where the attack took place is an area frequented by many tourists. The Resistance Front, a terrorist organization affiliated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Prime Minister, who is in Saudi Arabia, is assessing the situation and that he will immediately go to Kashmir on Narendra Modi's instructions. In the wake of the attack, Home Minister Amit Shah has called an emergency meeting at his residence. The meeting was attended by the Home Secretary, IB chief and others.
