KOZHIKODE: Hospital authorities have reacted to the death of the five-year-old girl who died while undergoing treatment for rabies despite being vaccinated. The explanation is that this is a category three case and the guidelines say that such wounds should not be stitched. The authorities said that there was no lapse in treatment.

The explanation by the hospital authorities comes after the child's father Salmanul Faris raised allegations this morning in the incident. The father had said that the treatment at Kozhikode Medical College was delayed and that he would file a complaint against the treatment. The father had alleged that no one from the government or the health department had contacted him.

Siya Faris, the daughter of Salmanul Faris, a native of Kakkathadam, Peruvallur, Malappuram, died on April 29. The child was bitten by a stray dog on March 29. Six other people had also been bitten. Siya was the first to be bitten. She was immediately taken to Tirurangadi Taluk Hospital and given the IDRV vaccine. Although the Taluk Hospital advised the child to be given ERIG (Rabies Immunoglobulin), the parents took the child to the community medicine department of Kozhikode Medical College. From there, they gave the ERIG vaccine, a 'ready-made' anti-rabies antibody that works immediately.

The relatives had alleged that the child was discharged from the medical college on the same day despite a deep head wound. They said that the medical college authorities said that the next treatment was sufficient after 48 hours. Siya's wounds had healed after reaching home. However, after she developed a fever and symptoms of rabies, she was taken to the medical college maternal and child care centre on the 23rd. Rabies was confirmed on the 26th.
