THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Crime Police has arrested Shajan Skariah, the editor of Marunadan Malayali online channel, on a complaint that he defamed a foreign Malayali and a businesswoman by reporting on her. The arrest is in connection with a defamation complaint filed by Gaana Vijayan, a native of Mahe. Shajan Skariah was arrested by the police from his house in Kudappanakunnu at around 9.30 pm on Monday night.
The complaint is that a video using defamatory and abusive language against Gaana Vijayan, a businesswoman in the UAE, was circulated on Marunadan Malayali's YouTube channel. Following this, Gaana Vijayan had filed a complaint via email to the state police chief and the Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner months ago and appeared in person at the ACJM court in Vanchiyoor and gave a confidential statement. An arrest was registered under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 120 of the IT Act on Monday, based on the confidential statement given in the court. The case is under non-bailable sections.
