NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will ask the President to impeach and remove former Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma if he bothers not to resign despite officials recovering hordes of money from his residence.

Varma has been transferred to the Allahabad High Court and relieved from his duties.

A three-member committee appointed by the Supreme Court submitted a report on the 4th of this month that found Yashwant Varma guilty. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, examined the report, sought an explanation from the judge and unofficially asked him to resign. Varma will have time until Friday to respond. Since there are only five days left for the Chief Justice to retire, the impeachment letter will likely be sent to the President within that time. The President will forward it to the Centre.

Impeachment will be approved if it receives the support of two-thirds of the members in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

A committee comprising Malayali Judge Anu Sivaraman of the Karnataka High Court, Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice G.S. Sandhavalia, submitted a report confirming that it was indeed Varma's money that was destroyed in the fire that broke out in the store room.

The fire broke out on March 14. The statements of the security personnel on guard, the firefighters who arrived to put out the fire, and the police were crucial. The statements of over 50 people, including the Delhi Police Commissioner, were recorded. The video footage of the fire was examined.

The committee didn’t take into belief Varma’s statement of not being in Delhi at the time of the incident.
