ALAPPUZHA: A student died of rabies in Alappuzha. The deceased was Suraj (17), a Plus Two student of Thakazhi Devaswom Board Higher Secondary School. The child contracted rabies from a pet dog. Suraj was undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital after being scratched by a dog's claw and developing rabies. The child was scratched by a dog at a relative's house. The child had not been vaccinated. Suraj was admitted to the hospital as his health condition deteriorated. The child's body was embalmed and handed over to his relatives.
15 people, including four children, died of rabies in the last four months in Kerala. In 2021, 11 people died of rabies in the state. In 2022, the death toll had increased to 27. In 2023, 25 people died and in 2024, 26 people died. Most of the victims who died of rabies are children. 102 people have died from rabies in the last five years. Of these, 20 died despite being vaccinated. The others were not vaccinated. Doctors say that the first few minutes are crucial if bitten by a dog. The wound should be cleaned thoroughly with soap and water, and the person should go to the nearest hospital to get vaccinated.
