DOHA: India's javelin throw superstar Neeraj Chopra made history at the Diamond League by breaching the 90-meter mark for the first time in his career. However, despite this landmark achievement, he had to settle for the silver medal. The gold went to Germany’s Julian Weber. Neeraj threw 90.23 meters on his third attempt in Doha. His first attempt was 88.44 meters, while the second attempt was a foul throw.
Until now, Neeraj’s personal best was 89.94 meters, achieved at the Stockholm Diamond League. He had won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with a throw of 87.58 meters. Last year, he finished second at the Paris Olympics with a throw of 89.45 meters, behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who won gold with an Olympic record throw. However, the Pakistani athlete did not compete in the Doha Diamond League.
Neeraj competed in Doha under his new coach, Jan Železný. Achieving the best throw of his career at the start of a season that includes the World Athletics Championship will significantly boost his confidence. Another Indian athlete, Kishore Jena, also competed in the javelin event in Doha but finished in eighth place.
