THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Veena George warned about the rising COVID cases in Kerala after the disease made its way back to many South Asian countries. She asked people to practice caution.

The Omicron JN1 variants LF7 and NB1.8, now circulating in Southeast Asian countries, have a higher potential for disease transmission but are not severe. Those with symptoms such as cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath should wear masks. It is advisable for the elderly, pregnant women, and those with serious illnesses to wear masks in public places and when travelling.

Masks are mandatory in hospitals. Health workers must wear masks. Unnecessary hospital visits should be avoided. It is better to wash your hands with soap frequently. The State Level Rapid Response Team (RRT) met to assess the general situation in the state. 182 Covid cases have been reported in the state in May. 57 cases have been reported in Kottayam district, 34 cases in Ernakulam and 30 cases in Thiruvananthapuram. Instructions have been given to conduct Covid tests on those who are symptomatic in the state. Instructions have also been given to ensure RTPCR kits and other safety equipment.

The meeting specifically discussed the Nipah prevention activities. The control room was instructed to continue its activities by following the protocol. The meeting assessed that the containment zone can be withdrawn since there is no spread of the disease.

Care should be taken as there is a possibility of water-borne diseases due to polluted water. Caution should also be taken against diseases such as cholera and hepatitis A.

Additional Chief Secretary, Health Department, NHM State Mission Director, Director, Health Department, Director, Medical Education Department, Additional Directors, Health Department, and RRT Members, participated in the meeting.
