death

KANNUR: Due to heavy rain, a portion of soil collapsed at the national highway construction site in Chalakkunnu, Kannur, resulting in the death of a migrant worker. The deceased was Biyas Owan (34), a native of Jharkhand. The incident occurred around 5 PM yesterday. The accident took place near the service road leading from Chalakunnu towards Koothuparamba.

Earlier, on the 12th of this month, another migrant worker, Mintaj Mir from West Bengal, died in a similar incident when a section of the national highway collapsed at Mattalayikkunnu in Kasaragod.

Biyas was engaged in concrete work beside the service road when the soil gave way and collapsed onto him. It is reported that he got trapped between the soil and reinforcing concrete rods. Though the fire force and police arrived at the scene, fellow workers had already pulled him out and rushed him to a private hospital in Kannur, where he was declared dead.

Only a small portion of the area collapsed, but the victim was caught underneath. Since the road was not open to traffic, no further accidents occurred. Although many workers were present at the time, no one else was injured.
