THIRUVANNANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of heavy rains in Kerala for the next five days. Red alert has been issued in more districts. The IMD has declared red alert in eight districts today.
The red alert is in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. There is red alert in Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod tomorrow. The possibility of extremely heavy rains has been predicted. The IMD defines extremely heavy rain as getting more than 204.4 mm of rain in 24 hours.

The IMD has declared an orange alert in the following districts. The possibility of very heavy rainfall has been predicted in isolated places. The IMD means that very heavy rainfall (Very Heavy Rainfall) is expected to fall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

The IMD has declared a yellow alert in the following districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted. Heavy rain is defined as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is received in 24 hours.
Extremely heavy rain will create accidents. Heavy rain is expected to occur in a short period of time. It may cause mountain and flash floods. There is also a possibility of waterlogging in urban areas and generally low-lying areas. The situation of continuous rain may cause mudslides and landslides. The public and government agencies should be extremely vigilant.
Special instructions for public
People living in areas where landslides, mudslides and mountain floods are possible in the hilly areas that are receiving heavy rains should move to a safe place. People should be ready to move during the day.
People living in low-lying areas where waterlogging is common should move to camps that are prepared after assessing the situation.
Due to the possibility of strong winds, those living in unsecured houses and those living in houses with weak roofs should be especially vigilant. Those who see a danger ahead should contact the authorities and move to safe places as a safety precaution.
Trees/posts/boards, walls, etc. that are in a dangerous condition in private and public places should be secured and trees should be trimmed. Dangerous conditions should be brought to the attention of the authorities.
During heavy rains, it is not permissible to cross rivers, bathe, fish or go into rivers or other water bodies for any reason.
Avoid non-essential travel as much as possible during heavy rains. Recreational trips to waterfalls, water bodies and hilly areas should be avoided until the rain warning is lifted.
Exercise special caution when traveling on roads adjacent to water bodies. Exercise caution on roads under repair. The possibility of road accidents increasing during heavy rains should be anticipated.
